ScreenRant has a good recap of a recent MTV interview with Jon Favreau, the director of the two Iron Man movies and executive producer of the Avengers movie.
Lots of scenerios laid out by ScreenRant and some good food for thought like:
"Favreau may be resolved in his decision not to direct The Avengers RIGHT NOW, but once Iron Man 2 comes out (and if it does gangbusters business at the box office as expected) then Marvel might be motivated to throw quite a few zeroes behind a director’s fee to ensure that The Avengers turns out just as well. It would be hard for anybody to say no to the right price."
