Hot Off The Press for August 2009

I’ve collected comics since I was 10 or so. Somehow I roped my parents into taking me to a science fiction convention 40 miles away when I was 13.
I worked 4 jobs in my teens to support my “habit”. And if my Mom knew where I rode my bike to on those lost Saturdays… well she would stroke out.
I opened my stores 20 years ago and bought AYSS almost 10 years ago.
I’ve owned or held most of the rarest comics and met many of my heroes. Time marches on but I still wasn’t prepared for the phone call earlier this month.
On the line was the sister of a long time AYSS customer James O. He had passed suddenly on the 15th of June. He was only a few years older than me. He lived alone and went undiscovered for several days.
She was pressed into sorting out his affairs and turning off his comic subscriptions was part of the “to do” list.
She knew he read and liked comics and science fiction but had no idea how much until she was confronted with the task of settling the estate.
She was at a loss with how to deal with the mountain of his collection.
Please, make sure everyone in your life knows your wishes for your collection and possible options for its liquidation.
Donate it to your old school, sell it in a garage sale. Burn it, whatever. Just make sure everyone around you knows what it is, how to deal with it and how much its worth.
